Birmingham Chapter of Charms Inc
We are Birmingham Chapter of Charms Inc. Our goal is to provide a positive outlook for the community.
We are committed to help those in need through service projects and scholarship opportunities. We are
also the founding Chapter in Alabama.Meet our Chapter President
Charm Sharon Bolden
The last three and a half years have been filled with dreams and visions coming to fruition. We have grown and expanded our horizon in the City of Birmingham and my heart is filled with love, joy, and excitement as I think of the many things we have accomplished. With our sisters working together, we have relieved families of their stress, high school seniors were assisted in making the transition to postsecondary
education, homeless children were allowed to remain in a home filled with love and the list continues. It is because of the generosity of our charm sisters and their giving spirit that we can be a beacon of light as we continue the things that Jesus inspires us to do. Through prayer, unity and love we can strive for greater heights because we
know God is with us and we cannot fail when we are on one accord. More
importantly, let’s continue to bind together in love and sisterhood.HISTORY OF THE BIRMINGHAM CHAPTER OF CHARMS, INC.
In early 2003, a group of women, under the guidance of Mildred Brown Rupert, organized themselves
and became the “Sterling Links of Hope,” a prospective chapter of Charms, Inc. On October 11, 2003,
this group was installed as the Birmingham Chapter of Charms, Inc. Being the first to be installed in this
area, they became the Charter Members of Birmingham Charms, Inc. The group included Geraldine W.
Collins, R. Marie Richardson, Jacqueline Carr, Debra Hardy, Mildred Henry, Patricia Linson, Mildred B.
Rupert, Earnestine Adams, Venita Bishop, Mary Banks, Viola Mims, and Mary A. Shaw. Two of the charter
members are still active as of October 2020.
The Birmingham Chapter of Charms, Inc. hit the ground running. The first project was the JCCEO Head
Start Scholarships Fund. A contribution of nearly $1,000 was made to this fund in August 2004. The first
fund raiser was a yard sale that included new children’s shoe, donated to the Chapter by a member of
the Chapter who was liquidating stock from her store. The next project was a food drive that was held in
conjunction with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service: 40 Days of Peace. Food was collected,
purchased, and distributed to low-income families. The Chapter has also focused on projects to increase
awareness of Diabetes in the Afro-American Community, Mental Illness, and Prevention of Suicide. We
continue to support Children’s Village, a Christian home for girls and boys ages 6-18 who have been
orphaned, abandoned, abused and or neglected. It is the goal of Birmingham Charms, Inc, to help,
assist, and support worthwhile causes throughout the Birmingham/Jefferson County Communities.
The Birmingham Chapter contributed to the creation of the National Charms’ quilt. The Chapter
submitted the photo of the ‘Three Kneeling Preachers’, a statue located in the Kelly Ingram Park in
Birmingham, Alabama. The park served as a staging ground for civil rights demonstrations in
Birmingham. The Birmingham Chapter of Charms, Incorporated hosted the National Executive Board
Meeting in 2017.Birmingham Charms Officers

2019-2020 Year in Review
The Birmingham Chapter of Charms, Incorporated welcomed five new members during the 2019-2020 calendar year. The Chapter was represented by 19 beautiful, resilient and dedicated Charms. During the 2019-2020 year, the world faced a devastating pandemic of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Our Chapter of Charms continued to gather in person through March 2020. Due to the pandemic, after March 2020, we met virtually via Zoom (a video conferencing tool) to fulfill our mission.
The Chapter continued to support a mission of humanitarian service through donations and financial support to Children’s Village and Jessie’s Place. Contributions were made to three selected families in need of financial assistance during the 2019 Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday Season, as well as, to our Charm members facing difficult times. The Birmingham Chapter of Charms, Incorporated was allotted a $1,000 distribution from the Charms COVID-19 Project. The $1,000 was donated to the
Alabama Community Food Bank.
Children's Village--A Christian home for boys and girls ages 6-18 who have been orphaned, abandoned, abused and or neglected.
Jessie's Place--A homeless shelter for women and children.
Alabama Community Food Bank--A network that engages in the fight to end hunger.
The Birmingham Chapter partnered with the local Metro Birmingham Branch of the NAACP to advance political and civic awareness. Voter registration forums were held at local high schools and communities. Ramsay High School, Wenonah High School, and Hooper City are some of the sites that were visited. The Birmingham Chapter assisted in registering about 70 high school students to vote. One member observed that ‘it was a life changing experience’ both for her and the new voters…
The Chapter sought to improve the quality of life by promoting higher education through the initiation of a scholarship program. The Birmingham Chapter of Charms awarded a $1,000 scholarship to four local 2020 high school graduating seniors. One of the scholarships bears the name of our charter member Geraldine Winfield Collins. Mrs. Collins is an active and charter member of the Birmingham Chapter of Charms. Myah Brown of Ramsay High School was awarded the Geraldine Winfield Collins Scholarship. Stanley Kindall, III and Micaiah Meadows from Ramsay High School along with Dionne Meadows of Woodlawn High School were awarded the Birmingham Chapter of Charms, Incorporated Scholarship.
The 2019-2020 fundraisers included a Fashion Show/Luncheon and the sale of facial masks displaying the Charms’ emblem. Wearing mask and social distancing were integral in the fight against COVID-19. Due to COVID-19 precautions, the Fashion Show/Luncheon was cancelled but our very generous patrons allowed the Chapter to use the ticket sale proceeds to support our scholarship program. As a social organization, The Birmingham Chapter celebrated its annual Founders’ Day at Ruth’s Place. Christmas was celebrated with the Atlanta Chapter of Charms. The installation of the Nashville Chapter of Charms was attended via Zoom as was the 2020 Conclave hosted by the Cleveland Chapter of Charms. We played bingo, celebrated birthdays, observed Founders’ Month, and attended our Birmingham Chapter retreat via Zoom.
The 2019-2020 calendar year presented our Chapter and the world with some hefty challenges. By the grace of God, we are still here and preparing to zoom into the future! Come with us!
